Natural skincare has been around for thousands of years. Long before there were 12-step routines and $200 moisturisers, women in Egypt, India, the Middle East and across Asia were using turmeric, rose water, honey, clay and milk to keep their skin glowing, clear and healthy.

First: What’s Your Skin Type?

Before you choose a mask, you need to know your skin. Most people get this wrong — and end up using the wrong ingredients, which is why they think natural skincare “doesn’t work.”

Ask yourself: How does your skin feel 2 hours after washing your face?

  • Tight, dry or a little flaky? → You have dry skin. You need deeply nourishing, hydrating masks. Think avocado, honey, oatmeal, rose hip oil.
  • Comfortable and balanced? → You have normal skin. Lucky you! Focus on maintaining your glow with brightening masks — papaya, matcha, turmeric.
  • Shiny, especially on the forehead and nose? → You have oily skin. You need clarifying, pore-minimising masks — bentonite clay, charcoal, egg white.
  • Oily in some areas, dry in others? → You have combination skin. Use different masks on different zones — clay on the T-zone, a nourishing mask on the cheeks.
  • Easily red, reactive or sensitive to new products? → You have sensitive skin. Stick to the gentlest ingredients — aloe vera, chamomile, oatmeal, cucumber.

Got it? Good. Now let me give you a recipe.


Free Recipe: Golden Turmeric & Yogurt Glow Mask

This is one of my absolute favourites and honestly one of the most effective masks in my whole collection. It’s good for almost every skin type and you can make it in under two minutes.

What you need

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice

How to make it

  1. Mix the turmeric and yogurt together first until smooth — no lumps.
  2. Add the lemon juice and stir well.
  3. Apply an even layer to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area.
  4. Leave on for 12–15 minutes.
  5. Rinse off with lukewarm water using gentle circular motions.
  6. Follow with your regular moisturiser.

Why it works

Turmeric contains curcumin, one of the most researched natural anti-inflammatory and brightening compounds in skincare. Yogurt’s lactic acid gently dissolves dead skin cells without any scrubbing. And lemon’s vitamin C targets dark spots and uneven tone.

The result? Brighter, smoother skin from ingredients that cost less than a cup of coffee.

Pro tip: Wear an old top — turmeric stains fabric. And rinse very thoroughly to avoid a golden tint if you have fair skin. You can also substitute lemon juice with rose water if your skin is on the sensitive side.
